Charity of the month

Each month, we highlight one of the charities that Beer52 has supported. This issue, Kirsty Cleary shines a light on an organisation tackling the symptoms and underlying causes of homelessness.

An uncomfortable but under-stated fact of modern life is that many of us are just one payslip away from living on the streets. Cyrenians, a charity based in Scotland, tackles the causes and consequences of homelessness, by understanding and acknowledging that anyone can find themselves in difficult circumstances, and that such problems can quickly spiral.

Cyrenians works at the sharp end of the homelessness crisis through its assertive outreach programme, providing direct support for those currently experiencing street homelessness or temporary accommodation. For some, this may mean moving into the private rented sector, for others it’s about building confidence engaging with services such as a GP or bank. The charity’s approach is flexible, patient and focused on getting individuals to a position where they can begin planning their next step.

It also links into services that support vulnerable individuals going forward, including developing cooking skills, enhancing employability, fostering positive communities and finding creative outlets. In the winter of 2021, it was Beer52’s honour to support the Cyrenians.
