Charity of the month

Each month, we highlight a charity that the Beer52 team has recently lent support to. This issue, Kirsty Cleary fills us in on Mermaids, the support and advocacy group that’s looking out for trans and gender non-conforming children.

This month, Beer52 and Ferment are proud to sponsor Mermaids, a charity dedicated to supporting trans, non-binary and gender-diverse children, young people and their families. Founded in 1995 by a group of parents of gender-nonconforming children, Mermaids started out as a small helpline. Today, it is one of the UK’s leading LGBTQIA+ charities, empowering thousands of people with its secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events and residential weekends.

The charity also has a wider mission, to educate and inform wider society on gender identity, by helping professionals accommodate and reassure gender-diverse young people. It runs training courses for professionals seeking to learn, listen and improve, in the NHS, schools, social services, CAMHS, police and uniformed services, as well as other charity, corporate and public sector clients. It can also deliver training to support HR departments and management, helping them better understand the needs of transgender employees, and ensure all policies and procedures are inclusive. Unconscious bias and discrimination are still prevalent; Mermaids can help tackle this.

We stand at a critical moment for trans rights in the UK. In recent months, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has dramatically shifted its position on trans rights, delaying reforms in Scotland and England that would have banned so-called ‘conversion therapies’ – pseudo-therapeutic interventions, aimed at forcing gender-nonconforming people into their assigned gender. There has never been a more critical time to make your voice heard.

Transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse children deserve the freedom and confidence to explore their gender identity wherever their journey takes them, free from fear, isolation and discrimination. If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to their helpline: 0808 801 0400.
