Charity of the month

This issue we talked to Joshua Hart about how his personal experience of frequenting hospitals throughout his childhood, has informed his support of charities that put 'child first, patient second'

On 23rd October, Craft Beer Advisor Joshua Hart will be running the Edinburgh 10K in aid of Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity. The Royal Hospital for Children & Young People helps seriously ill babies, children and young people by supporting their medical care, mental health and family’s wellbeing.

The team at the hospital delivers daily arts activities, youth work and family support to those that need it most. They also work to transform the hospital and healthcare environment from clinical to comfortable so children and families feel welcome, relaxed and reassured; in the last few years, this has included transforming a courtyard into a musical garden, and bringing the seaside inside to support good mental health. Their vision is 'child first, patient second' and it's at the heart of everything they do.

“While I don’t have first hand experience of visiting Edinburgh Children’s Hospital, my reason for nominating ECHC for our charity of the month donation, comes from my own history of visiting the children’s hospital in Birmingham for 16 years” says Joshua. “I was born with congenital heart disease and needed 2 operations as well as yearly check-ups to make sure I was as healthy as humanly possible. I know all too well what it’s like to be a child waiting for hours on end to be seen, and having to stay in a hospital overnight.

“I’m hoping to raise £250 for ECHC and the money raised here will help those that need it most. As well as above; £10 can provide a memory box to bring comfort to a bereaved family, £20 can pay for a bedside support session so children in hospital feel less alone, £50 can fund life-changing equipment and ground-breaking research, so every child receives the best care possible."
