If your French is based largely on 30-year-old high school memory, as mine is, the name of this outfit may have you opening Google Translate to double-check yourself. Vignerons Mais Autrement (lit. ‘winemakers, but differently’) is the commercial brand of Terre de Vignerons, a union of ten cooperative cellars in the Entre-Deux-Mers and Duras regions of southwest France. Together, these represent around 1000 individual winegrowers working some 15,000 hectares between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and into the Bergerac.
The cooperative model has deep roots in French wine history. Founded largely between the two world wars to give smaller growers access to shared infrastructure—presses, storage, bottling lines—cooperatives became the financial backbone of many rural wine economies. Membership allowed a grower with a few hectares to remain a grower rather than become a labourer, and the model still accounts for a substantial share of French wine production. The challenge though comes from coordinating a thousand growers around a single story, while preserving the individuality of their fruit.
With this in mind, it’s little wonder that the Vignerons mais Autrement portfolio is so conspicuously broad, featuring wines across designations, including Bordeaux AOC at the more traditional end, IGP Atlantique, covering the broader southwest and, of course, Vin de France. The latter category is where the brand’s more contemporary work lives, with varietal wines, lower-alcohol expressions, and even a non-alcoholic range.
This is a markedly different relationship with Vin de France than (for example) the natural wine producers of the Loire or Auvergne maintain, using the designation to access markets that prefer varietally labelled wines or styles outside traditional regional expressions.
