Cantine Capuzzimati, in Puglia’s Salento region, was established in 1952 by Cataldo Capuzzimati. Beginning as a modest venture focused on grapes from the family’s own farm, the winery passed in 1974 to Cataldo’s children, kicking off a phase of rapid expansion and ambitious quality goals. Today, Cantine Capuzzimati is renowned for producing DOP and IGP wines that express the distinctive terroir of Taranto and Salento, through varietals including Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Malvasia.
Situated in San Marzano di San Giuseppe, the winery is surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and vineyards, predominantly cultivated using the traditional Apulian ‘alberello’ method. This landscape, dotted with dry stone walls and ancient ‘pajare’ structures, reflects the rich agricultural heritage of the region. The land on which Capuzzimati’s vineyards now sit has a long and fascinating history; notably, in 1530, Demetrio Capuzzimati,
an Albanian mercenary captain, established a community for Albanian families fleeing the Ottoman Empire here. This Arbëreshë heritage remains integral to the region’s identity.
Marrying a love of the local winemaking tradition with an eye on the international wine market, Cantine Capuzzimati has built a reputation for producing wines that not only honour its Salento heritage, but also appeal to contemporary palates.
