Bersano

With almost 120 years of Piedmont history at its back, Bersano today controls one of the largest collections of vineyards in the area, with vines stretching from the Nizza and Barbera d’Asti zones to Langhe. It wasn’t always this way though; the business started as a tiny cellar serving the local market, and only began its journey of expansion after being bought in the 1930s by noted local lawyer and publisher Arturo Bersano. 

Arturo once famously said “If you want to drink well, buy a vineyard”, and it was clearly a motto he lived by. Under his leadership, the winery that took his name rapidly acquired dozens of estates across Piedmont and became a pioneer of estate-bottled Barbera and Nebbiolo.

Although Bersano is strongly associated with Nizza/Barbera, it also owns or controls key parcels in the Langhe and Roero hills, allowing it to produce Nebbiolo-based wines, including Alba DOC bottlings. The Alba DOC zone covers much of the hillside land between Barolo and Roero, offering a mix of sandy, clay-limestone and marl soils, well suited to producing more approachable expressions of Nebbiolo compared to the age-demanding Barolo and Barbaresco.

While Barbera is Bersano’s commercial backbone, Nebbiolo has long been central to the company’s identity. Arturo Bersano was among the early figures to bottle single-vineyard Barbarescos and Barolos, and the estate continues that legacy today. Nebbiolo d’Alba allows Bersano to offer a gateway into the grape’s character, while maintaining high quality standards via estate fruit and long-term grower relationships.
