In the northeastern corner of Italy, the limestone scree of the Julian Alps gives way to the broad alluvial plains of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. These stony fields—which shape the hard lives of the vine and the vigneron alike—have been the home of Cantina Vigna Verde for nearly half a century. Established in 1976, the winery has evolved into a significant collective of growers, managing 600 hectares of vineyards.
Unlike the boutique estates of the nearby hills, Vigna Verde’s identity—and the character of its wines—is rooted in its grave (gravel) terroir, composed of stones washed down by the Tagliamento River, which acts as a heat radiator, ripening fruit during the day and cooling rapidly at night. This thermal swing is behind the region’s signature acidity, most vibrantly expressed in its Ribolla Gialla wines.
For centuries, Ribolla Gialla was a staple of the Friulian countryside, producing wines with a clinical freshness. On the palate, it delivers a snap of lemon zest and green apple, tempered by a subtle, flinty minerality; a bracing reminder of the chilly mountain air that covers the plains each evening.
Vigna Verde’s work with Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso may be less well known, but it speaks of the land with just as clear a voice. Named for its ‘red stalk’ this ancient varietal is notoriously tricky, requiring patient ripening to mollify its naturally high tannins and acidity. Vigna Verde’s interpretation eschews the ‘international style’ of plush, jammy reds, instead offering a glass of dark, brambly fruit, underpinned by notes of cracked black pepper and forest floor.
