Tűzkő Estate

Meet the winery

Tűzkő takes its name from the Hungarian word for ‘flint’, which is found in the ground across this historic corner of the Tolna hills, where this estate has operated since the eighteenth century. Its original custodians, the noble Apponyi family, are long gone, though their granary building still serves as the estate headquarters. Its modern incarnation began after the political upheaval of the early 1990s, when the reopening of Hungary to outside investment drew the attention of two of Italy’s great wine families.

Piero Antinori and Jacopo Mazzei, both from Tuscan dynasties with centuries of winemaking behind them, saw in Tűzkő a rare and enticing combination; its existing vineyards and dramatic cellars hewn into the tuff rock, are set in a landscape whose potential for viticulture had been recognised since Roman times. In 2000, the pair took over the estate together, and it remains in their hands today. The day-to-day work now falls to estate manager Dr. Árpád Erdélyi and winemaker Cecília Simon, who between them translate that ambition and distinctly Tuscan sensibility into the bottle.

What makes the site unusual is its relative coolness. Where most of the surrounding region concentrates on red wine, Tűzkő’s vineyards sit at a slightly higher altitude, among rolling hills and forest, with average temperatures around two degrees lower than their neighbours. This cooler microclimate suits white varieties especially well, giving wines with freshness, minerality and aromatic lift, while still ripening reds of real elegance.

Beyond the cellar: Tűzkő sits in Bátaapáti, a small village first settled by German-speaking families in the eighteenth century. It opens its historic tuff-rock cellars to the public as part of the regional Open Cellar Days each year, welcoming visitors in for tastings among the barrels. It remains an unassuming, working presence in one of the Tolna hills’ most picturesque corners.
