The Garden Brewery’s Zagreb-based brewery needs no introduction, with an expansive, glass taproom that is internationally recognised as one of the most beautiful and unique in the business. Based in the shell of an old garden centre, the taproom has used the original building’s light and warmth to create a microclimate that’s comfortable for drinkers, and the 40 mature trees that create natural divisions within the space, and demarcate pathways between the brewery, bar, and food stands.

“Trees were our design material,” says The Garden’s founder, David Plant. “We removed concrete and created a large lawn. We inoculated the soil with native mycorrhizal fungi to create natural links between trees, ensuring protection against pests and climate extremes, and removing the need for chemical fertilisers. We also incorporated eco-friendly, permeable building surface materials, and native plants into the design and construction; all steps that are better for the environment, local birds and animals, and our staff and customers. Our microclimate has a lower temperature because of absorbed water evaporation, increased natural moisture and lower dust levels. It's a great place, created with a good conscience.”

As proud as David is of the taproom as a structure, he finds it even more rewarding to see people using and enjoying it. “Bringing joy to many thousands of people in what are undoubtedly challenging times means a lot to us,” he says. “By being welcoming and inclusive and delivering the best in all we do, from the beer brewed to the events we produce, we get to see people loving Garden beer, and that’s something we all feel very proud of.” If Zagreb is on your bucket list, 2025 might be the year to visit, as The Garden will then celebrate its 20th birthday. “There will be special things going on within our brewery, music events/festivals and food offerings. The brewery taproom, being the heart and soul HQ, will host many of these and include collaborations with local and international partners, promoters and friends.”
