The Joiners Arms in Camberwell is an institution and has been some form of pub since the 1800s, when it was frequented by (you guessed it) joiners. The pub today boasts some amazing internal features — including a tiled mural on the front bar wall bearing the arms of the Joiners’ & Ceilers’ company, one of the some 100 City livery companies — but the interior design is not what the venue is best known for today. \
The Joiners has earned a reputation for hosting exceptional live music and open mic nights, with Florence Welch even asking the pub if she could launch her song ‘South London Forever’ there. “When I took over the business six years ago there was a punk music scene and a few regulars that have been drinking there for years,” says pub manager Gary Phibbs. “Now we have a much more varied range of customers, coming from local NHS workers, to students, to music enthusiasts who come to our great open mic nights. We also get lots of sports followers — rugby in particular has been a great crowd — and even locals who leave the area come back to the pub regularly. Seeing the place packed out with people enjoying our big event days has to be the most rewarding part of the job.”
“When this project came up, we were super happy to work with The Joiners Arms to celebrate their amazing venue and to represent south-east London in the best way possible,” says Brick Brewery’s brand manager Sally Stewart. “They truly are one of the best venues in Camberwell, so we’re looking forward to getting the stone fruit lager we’ve collaborated on, on the bar as well as in people’s fridges across the country.”
