Established in November 2012, The Hanging Bat sought to bring the rough-and-ready vibe of a New York craft beer bar to Edinburgh, creating the city’s biggest and best range of craft beers as well as creating its own with an in-house nano-brewery. In the 12 years since, it has grown alongside (and championed) Scotland’s home-grown craft beer industry, evolving into a true Edinburgh institution and a destination for beer lovers well beyond the city limits.
Its 17 keg lines and six cask lines showcase a mix of styles, from the lower-abv lagers, pales and traditional ales to the highest abv stouts, IPAs and ales. While nearly all the lines are fully rotated after every keg or cask, over the last couple of years there has been more of a focus on Scottish-made beer.
The bar has also upped its cocktail game in the past few years, slinging classics and creative cocktails made with beer. According to staff, the most rewarding parts of the past year have been taking part in a number of collaborations and ramping up its in-house Hanging Bat Brew programme. The success of the latter can be seen in the number of regulars asking for the Bat’s house lager, IPA or sour, before they try any of the other beers on the extensive bar board.
