When the Ferment team last visited Frontaal in-person, in 2022, the Breda-based brewery was right on the cusp of a major move into a much bigger, nearby facility. It was an impressive, and much-loved operation before the move, but in the years since, Frontaal has earned a reputation that precedes it, and set its sights on a new ambition; to become the biggest independent brewery in the Netherlands. With the extra space, and support of over 6000 beer-loving investors, Frontaal has been able to innovate and invest in the kit needed to produce some truly exceptional beers. Is there any better example than a 7% lager?
“As of 2023, we moved into our new facility, called The Bay, where we built a state-of-the-art, fully automated, 60HL ROLEC brewhouse,” says e-commerce and export manager Guus van Nijnatten. “After moving into our new brewery, we've been investing ever since. In 2024, we bought our own chamber pasteuriser, which means we can brew Smoothie Sours and non-alcoholic beers in-house. Our CFT canning line can process 15,000 cans per hour. We have also opened our brewery for contract brewing and contract canning. The facility we're in is built for growth, so there will be room for more tanks in the future.”
Like every brewery we celebrate in this issue, we ask Frontaal if there’s anything it would like to see change or progress in the craft beer industry this year. “There’s a shift happening, with people moving from commercial beers to craft beers,” says Guus. “Prices are going up for commercial beers, so why not enjoy craft beer for just a little bit more? We hope people continue challenging themselves with new tastes and don’t stick with the status quo — Beer For Thought! In the meantime, we’ll keep pushing the line and focusing on what’s ahead.
