Founded in 1842, Pauls Malt has now been a champion of British malt for almost two centuries. During this time, the maltster has built a world-wide client base, navigated tumultuous times in global history, supported generations of farmers and brewers, and now, in 2025, it’s throwing its weight behind the transformative power of regenerative agriculture.
Pauls Malt was acquired by Boortmalt in 2010, which is when innovation really stepped-up several notches. Within Boortmalt there are 8 craft brands including Pauls Malt, between which there are 27 malting plants around the world, with a combined capacity of 3.1 million tonnes. In fact, it was a Boortmalt initiative to revive Belgian malting barley that started the company’s direct involvement in regenerative agriculture.
“Seeing the positive impact that Belgomalt had on reviving the malting barley crop in Belgium using regenerative farming methods was incredible,” says UK craft manager, Henry Smith. “Given the growth of the regenerative farming movement in the UK and our ambitious environmental targets, we started to look at it domestically for Pauls Malt. People care about where their produce comes from and how it reaches them nowadays. That's why we have created a sustainable malt choice for all brewers. From plant to pint.”
Henry believes that what makes Pauls Malt unique is its interest in catering to all audiences. “We supply to brewers and breweries of all sizes,” he says. “Our minimum order is just one 25kg bag, and the sky’s the limit when it comes to what we can cater to." Pauls Malt supplies a full range of products, from base malts to chocolate malts and crystal malts, and is now offering regeneratively grown barley to the masses.
