About Anspach & Hobday

The story of Anspach & Hobday began in the early days of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, where Jack and Paul set out to brew the traditional styles they actually wanted to drink. Rather than chasing fleeting trends like hazy IPAs, they looked to the past for inspiration, finding a deep connection between the history of beer and the joy of making it. This "historian’s approach" has allowed them to revive the legacy of the London Porter while maintaining a relentless focus on drinkability and consistency.

While the brewery has spent over a decade perfecting everything from crisp lagers to salt and lime gose, it is London Black that has given the business its true identity. Developed during the quiet of lockdown, this 4.4% nitro porter was designed as a local, independent alternative to global stouts. By combining rich notes of roasted coffee and chocolate with a velvet-smooth mouthfeel, it has become a "British nitro porter" icon, often cited by enthusiasts as the finest pint of its kind in the country.

Operating from their 40HL brewhouse in Croydon, the team continues to champion styles that celebrate balance and subtlety. Beyond their flagship porter, beers like the Ansbacher Lager and The Ordinary Bitter have gained a loyal following for their honest, well-executed profiles. The brewery refuses to cut corners, insisting on traditional lagering times and high-quality ingredients to ensure that every beer, whether a smoked brown ale or a modern pale, lives up to the high standards of the Anspach & Hobday name.
